We are incredibly grateful to everyone who purchased the “Suport a València Box” to raise money for the people of Valencia after the DANA that occurred this past October.
Thanks to your generosity, we raised a total of $4,002.10 from the purchase price of 80 boxes!We are pleased to donate this full amount to Fundació Horta Sud, which will ensure that these funds will most directly help the individuals and families in need.
As is in the name, l’Horta Sud is the county where all the devastating floods occurred outside of Valencia. The foundation is an association of even more local associations that have been supporting this community with volunteers and focused support on the ground for more than 50 years.This DANA was one of the deadliest natural disasters in Spanish history.
The devastating floods came without warning and caused the deaths of over 220 people. The speed of the flood waters was 4 times the water flow rate of the Hudson River, moving 2,200 cubic meters of water per second. A year’s worth of rainfall was generated in the region in only 8 hours, raising flood water levels to 10 feet in some areas. In a region of 800,000 people, over 120,000 cars were piled up and destroyed and needed to be removed.
Your support will make a difference in the lives of those affected by this disaster. Together, we have shown that we can come together as a community to help those in need.
It has been a very hard few weeks for some of us at Lata. Two of us are Valencianos, born and living in Valencia for decades. We know these villages and grew up playing in those streets. We know a lot of people and small businesses who have lost everything, craftsman workshops, artist studios and local stores have been destroyed.
It is impossible to describe how difficult it has been to see all these images on TV without crying. Watching everything unfold from afar, we felt so helpless to contribute to recovery from New York.
That’s why we felt like we had to make this box, and we really want to express our gratitude for your help and support to our beloved Valencia, Moltes gracies de cor!
